The Double Stone Wall of NY and New England
Drive through the Hudson Valley or across rural New England and you will see them everywhere: long, winding stone walls tracing property lines, cutting through forests, and dividing old fields. These walls are part of the agricultural history of the Northeast.
In the 1700s and 1800s, as farmers cleared forests to create pasture and cropland, they unearthed enormous quantities of glacial fieldstone. Rather than discard it, they stacked it. Over generations, millions of tons of stone were hand placed into boundary walls, livestock enclosures, and field divisions. Many of the wooded stone walls you see today were once in open pasture. As farms were abandoned and forests returned, the walls remained, quiet markers of earlier land use.
One of the most enduring forms, and our specialty, is the classic New England double stone wall. Unlike simple fieldstone piles, double walls are built with two parallel faces of carefully selected stone, with a rubble filled core between them. Larger foundation stones anchor the base, while smaller stones interlock above. The result is a stable, self supporting structure that relies on gravity, friction, and craftsmanship rather than mortar. When built correctly, these walls can last centuries.
Today, stone walls serve both aesthetic and practical purposes. They define space, manage grade changes, create garden enclosures, and bring timeless character to a property. A well built double stone wall feels intentional and permanent. It connects modern landscapes to the region’s deep agricultural roots.
